Prof. Revankar Memorial Scholarship


Prof. Revankar Memorial Scholarship Award is awarded to graduating M.Tech. students with outstanding academic performance. Applications are invited from the graduating batch, and a department committee is constituted to decide on the selection.

About Prof. Revankar: Prof. G. N. Revankar had his college education in Dharwad and Pune. He graduated from Pune University in 1953, securing first class honours in BE Telecommunications.

After an initial short period of services in the overseas Communication Service he joined IIT Bombay in 1958 as a lecturer. He was deputed to U.S.S.R. on UNESCO FELLOWSHIP for a period of two years to get specialized training in Electron Devices Technology. On his return to India in 1962 he was promoted to the post of Assistant Professor. He became a Professor in 1973 and was Head of Electrical Engineering Department during 1973-1975.

He has guided a large number of B.Tech, M.Tech and Ph.D Projects mainly on hardware topics in electronic instrumentation and power electronics. During a span of ten years, he published more than 130 papers in National and International Journals in the field of power electronics, mainly dealing with simulation design aspects, new power circuit configurations etc. He played an active role in setting up a number of PG and UG laboratories at the Electrical Engineering Department at IIT Bombay.

He has a number of prestigious awards from JIETE and JIE (Electrical Section) for his contribution of outstanding papers published in the journals. Notable among them are K.S. Krishnan memorial award in 1984, CDIL award in 1984 and 1985 for his papers published in JIETE. He was awarded the Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya Gold Medal for 1982-83 and 1983-84, and the President of India prize for 1982-83 and 1983-84 for his publications in JIE.

In 1983 he took up the responsibility of setting up the Microprocessor Application Centre at IIT Bombay. The main aim of the centre is to spread the Microprocessor education in the engineering colleges in the Western region. A large number of Short term courses were conducted by the industry and IIT faculty and staff. He worked as In-charge of the Centre for about six years.

Prof. Revankar has acted as a consultant to a number of organizations in Bombay in the field of Power Electronics. He is a fellow of JIETE and a Senior member of IEEE.
