Prof.
Shankar Memorial Scholarship
Prof. Shankar Memorial Scholarship is
available to needy and deserving students. The nature of awards would be decided
by an institute committee. About Prof. Shankar: Prof. K. Shankar joined IITB
in August 1963 as an M.Tech, student and continued as a faculty till the end.
Prof. Shankar had endeared himself to a large community of students, colleagues,
friends and their family members - both within and outside the campus, in various
walks of life. Apart from intense academic involvement in IIT, he was extremely
dynamic in many professional organisations like IEEE, IETE etc. He was associated
with a large number of other academic institutions and universities in various
capacities.
Prof. Shankar was also a great lover of music. He patronized
many music sabhas by instituting memorial concerts. He was a voracious reader.
He had a large collection of music cassettes and books on varieties of topics
- many of them being bought not only for his personal use, but also for gifting
away to various friends and their families. His philanthropy extended to help
many individuals and institutions, in terms of financial assistance as well as
personal help. Whenever any of his friends, associates or their family members,
young or old, were suffering or hospitalized, Shankar used to run to them at the
earliest to offer assistance and solace.
In academics also, Shankar was
very sympathetic towards weak and poor students; he used to identify their shortcomings
- academic, financial, social or psychological; he encouraged them by offering
suitable help and advice, to boost their morale. Students of good standing also
enjoyed Prof. Shankars friendly association inside and out of class rooms.
Shankar, with his enormous memory and capacity to nurture friendship, had kept
contact with a large number of students, wherever they settled in their career.
Prof. K. Shankar expired on 2nd Feb. 2000, due to sudden cardiac arrest. He
had a long continuous association of nearly 37 years with IIT Bombay. He had completed
about 60 years just a couple of months before his death. He was active and dynamic
till the last day, though he was suffering from a heart problem for almost 8 years;
in fact, he even took a lecture before going to hospital on 1st Feb 2000.
In
order to propagate and keep alive the spirit, of at least a few laudable values
that Prof. Shankar practiced and nurtured during his life, it is thought befitting
to institute 'Prof. K.Shankar Memorial Fund', through contributions from his friends
and admirers. Annual proceeds from this fund would be utilized to award scholarships
to the needy and deserving students, prizes and medals for meritorious student-achievements
in some specified areas etc., in memory of Prof. Shankar. The nature of awards
and the actual amount associated with the awards would be decided depending upon
the amount of the fund collected. A small committee in IIT has been set up to
function in an advisory capacity to make suitable recommendations for the appropriation
of the proceeds of the fund for the purpose mentioned above. Implementation of
the recommendations of the committee would be looked after by the IIT administration.
