I obtained my BE in 1986 and MTech and PhD from IIT Kanpur in 1988 and 1995 respectively. Between 1988-89, I worked in Indian Space Research Organization, Ahmedabad. I was Member Technical Staff and Team Coordinator in High Performance Computing Group of Center for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune during 1994-97. Since 1997, I am working in the Department of Electrical Engineering of IIT Bombay as a Professor. I was also the Head of Computer Center of IIT Bombay during the period of 2008 to 2011.
My interests span both theoretical as well system design issues. Current research interests are in:
- Control and Performance Modeling of Wireless Networks.
- Quality of Service and Resource Allocation in Wired/Wireless Networks.
- Next Generation Wireless Network Protocols (related to 802.16m, LTE-Advanced and 4G Standards).
- Co-operative Relay and Self Organizing Network.
- Carrier Ethernet and Mobile Backhaul.
- Rural Wireless Network.
Our work in Carrier Ethernet and WiMAX has resulted in contributions to IEEE 802.1 and IEEE 802.16 standards. These contributions can be found here. Though I have mainly looked at networking issues, I am also interested in Digital Communications System theory.
I have supervised several graduate theses. A list can be found here. My current group members are listed here.
I am the Coordinator of Tata Teleservices- IIT Bombay Centre for Excellence in Telecom (TICET). This centre is part of Telecom Centers of Excellence (TCOE) - a public-private initiative established in IITs, IISc Bangalore and IIM Ahemdabad. See here for details. Most of my research is being funded by this centre.
Apart from theoretical research, I am also interested in practical aspects of networking. In IIT Bombay, I have led many technology development projects including open source MPLS router. I also co-founded the venture backed start-up company Eisodus Networks during 2002-2006. The company was engaged in developing technology in the area of Metro Ethernet for India and Asia-Pacific markets. I was also a Technology Advisor to Tejas Networks Ltd and worked closely with their standards and technology team.
Our group is also part of Indo-UK Advanced Technology Center of Excellence in Next Generation Networks, Systems and Services (IU-ATC).
