Welcome to the website of Applied Power Electronics Laboratory(APEL), primarily a research lab, in the Dept. of Electrical Engineering , Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay.

In Applied Power Electronics Laboratory we work in several areas of Power Electronics. Our current focus is on renewable energy (Solar PV, Wind, Fuel-cell) and storage (Battery, Super capacitor, Fly-wheel) with emphasis on optimal power extraction (MPPT), Grid connected systems, AC microgrid and DC microgrid. The other areas of interest are new converter topologies and their control, Electric Drives, Power Quality and EMI issues in electronic and power electronic systems. APEL supports many sponsored and consultancy projects funded by government agencies/industry such as BRNS, IITB Tata Centre, DST, MNRE, Hitachi India, BHEL, Hella India etc.etc.We have created the AC and DC microgrids in APEL that consist of a number of renewable energy sources like solar PV, wind, fuel cell, conventional sources and storage.

The laboratory is equipped with PV emulators, wind emulators, fuel cell emulator, installed roof-top PV system, dSPACE, high end power supplies including programmable supplies, Power and Logic analyzers, Programmable AC and DC electronic loads and Ultra capacitors. Computers with latest configurations and latest versions of various technical softwares like MATLAB and ORCAD are available. In APEL, we always believe that creativity comes with freedom. Students are always encouraged to work in respective interesting areas of research and interdisciplinary fields.

The main research areas are:
