Title: Pervasive Pollution Monitoring

Supervisor(s):  Prof. S. N. Merchant

Abstract:

               Distributed pollution level measurement

Sensing elements placed along roads, in buildings and in watercourses will provide information about both atmospheric pollution and the threats to health from contaminants in materials that are vital to health. This links directly to WHO and Global Health initiatives of the UN to which both governments subscribe.

Traffic monitoring

Traffic levels are set to grow in both the UK and India, and both the nature of the movement patterns experienced by cars and the quality of the roads are of importance to both drivers and the authorities associated with road planning and maintenance.

In technical terms, we will address the following research challenges (all, naturally, qualified by the application context): -

  • What software systems abstractions are most suitable for constructing adaptive sensor networks?
  • What inter-sensor protocols are needed to adapt to failure and recovery of nodes?
  • How can one best describe and dynamically discover new or evolved services, and new or evolved hardware?
  • How can one provide best effort service provision – seeking to maintain service availability in the context of energy-limited, failure-prone hardware and noisy networks with uncertain connectivity?
  • How can one manage deployed sensor networks in which there is only partial or asynchronous connectivity?
  •
