Image Processing has come of age, particularly in the area of multimedia, image and video coding, satellite imagery, a has and many other areas. Simultaneously, display technology has progressed in parallel and today many sophisticated displays are available. Unfortunately, there has been relatively little interaction between image processing and display technology.
Displays are fast moving from the classical CRT technology to flat panel display (FPD) technologies like Plasma screens and LCD. Each of the FPD technologies have their own unique performance attributes like speed, color gamut, brightness and contrast. Nevertheless, all of them have the common features like fixed matrix format, a variety of resolutions, and aspect ratio of 4:3 or 16:9. These displays have to cater to a variety of video signals in analogue or digital format like NTSC,PAL,SD, HDTV, family of computer formats like VGA, WVGA, XGA, SXGA, DVD, cine film etc. While attempting to match the signals to the display many artifacts arise. This where signal and image processing can play a major role. It is reasonable to expect that sophisticated image processing algorithms can tackle the artifact removal problems in image and video display technology. Today, real time software and firmware implementations for complex signal and image processing algorithms is possible.
The display community has recognized that the future performance of the displays depends heavily on new signal processing techniques and major companies are putting enormous effort in this direction.
In India, we have the best intellectual resources and many teams of renowned signal processing experts. It is worthwhile exploring if this community can be motivated to direct their efforts into this domain which may create a pool of Intellectual Property which in turn will give added and unique advantage to the display industry in the country.
The workshop, besides presentation, will have active brainstorming sessions. The participants will be from industry and academia.
The participants will deliberate issues and identify the needs and the capabilities so as to synergize them for best results.
