Tabla Bol Recitation Dataset

The dataset contains about 12 minutes of audio recordings of oral recitation and tabla playing of 20 traditional compositions of tabla music, by a professional tabla artist. The compositions were selected from a previous dataset[1], and are from several gharanas. These compostions are also available commercially in the educative video DVD by Pt. Arvind Mulgaonkar, titled 'Shades of Tabla'[2].

Each composition's audio is between 8 and 30 seconds long and is accompanied by a time-aligned stroke/bol level transcription (following the syllable mapping scheme in [1]). The transcriptions are in .txt files in a 3 column format: start-time, end-time, label. They were generated automatically by aligning an onset-detector's outputs with labels from the score of every compostiion (the score for each composition is available as a puncutated sequence of bols in .txt files[1]).

The recordings were carried out in a studio at 48kHz sampling rate. 2 microphones were used in the setup with one microphone recording the oral recitation and another, pointed at the instrument, recording the playing. The artist first recited the composition and then played it on the tabla.

Organisation of the Dataset
The dataset is organised as follows:
  • There are 20 folders for the 20 compositions, named using the serial number of the compositions as in the dataset in [1]
  • Each folder contains separate ‘.wav’ audio files of the oral recitation and the corresponding tabla playing, as well as the time-aligned transcriptions in ‘.txt’ files
  • A readme file describes the naming convention
  • Also included is a folder tilted 'Scores', containing all the score text files from the dataset in [1]
This dataset is being made available for non-commercial research purposes only. Please do cite this paper if you happen to use this dataset in your research:
