History

  •       IIT Bombay was established in the year 1957 and the department of Electrical Engineering (EE) has been one of the major departments from the inception of this institute. The department began with fifty undergraduate students, and forty postgraduate students; currently, the department has sixty faculty members, five hundred undergraduate students, and five hundred fifty postgraduate students. Initially the department began with three programs to award degrees, namely Bachelor of Technology, Master of Technology, and Doctor of Philosophy. Since 1996, the department also offers a five year dual degree (Bachelor of Technology and Master of Technology) in the specializations named Communications and Signal Processing and Microelectronics.

    • Department Specializations and their Evolution
    • Initially there were three main specializations in the department, namely, Electronics, Electro-Vacuum Technology, and Machines. With the developments in Electrical Engineering, by 1964, Electronics and Machines evolved into three specializations, namely, Power Systems and Drives, Communication Engineering, and Control and Instrumentation. On the other hand, Electro-Vacuum Technology became Electron Devices and Technology. At present there are five specializations in the Electrical Engineering department, namely, Communications and Signal Processing, Control and Computing, Power Electronics and Power Systems, Microelectronics, and Electronic Systems.
    • Research and Laboratories
    • The facilities in the department are among the best in India, and in some specialized areas compete with leading international universities. In many important areas of Electrical Engineering, we have faculty members who are active from a research point of view. There is strong collaboration with industry in the past two decades and a number of laboratories have been established through such collaboration. Research collaborators also include several national and international universities, and research organizations.
    • Teaching
    • Teaching has been given its due importance since the inception of the department. Many faculty members are active in research areas related to the subjects that they teach. Students are also supported by a departmental academic mentorship program. For students to develop into skilled researchers they must enjoy the work that they do and that the atmosphere must be conducive; therefore, a number of faculty members are available for counseling to the students.
