Both living and non-living systems are made up of molecules, yet differ vastly in the degree of sophistication they display. This is because networks of molecular interactions in living systems are arranged to implement subtle algorithms. One of my research goal is to uncover such algorithms, at the levels of biochemical networks inside cells; networks of neurons in brains; and evolution; and explore their technological reach. I am also fascinated by fundamental physics, and by connections between physics and information, especially the field of quantum information, and "resource theory" formulations of thermodynamics. My teaching goal is to communicate the unity of philosophical and technological ideas beyond academic boundaries, and the feeling of joy and empowerment that emerges from a deep understanding. My recreational pursuits include improv theater, poetry, dancing, and ultimate frisbee.
