Dr. V. Ramgopal Rao is an Institute Chair Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Bombay and the Chief Investigator for the Centre of Excellence in Nanoelectronics project at IIT Bombay. Dr. Rao has over 350 publications in the area of Electron Devices & Nanoelectronics in refereed international journals and conference proceedings and has 22 patents, either awarded or pending. He has supervised/co-supervised over 100 Masters students & 22 Ph.D. students at IIT Bombay in the area of Nanoelectronics since the year 2000.
The primary focus of Prof. Rao’s research has been the deep understanding of the impact of materials and device design on nanoscale devices, circuits and sensors, and utilizing this understanding in the engineering of semiconductor devices and systems to significantly improve their performance. His work has been widely recognized for its impact with many prestigious awards & recognitions in India & abroad. Among the many awards/recognitions he received, the notable ones being the Infosys Prize in 2013, IIT Bombay Excellence in Research Award in 2012; Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in 2005, and the Swarnajayanti Fellowship award in 2004. He served as an Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices during 2004-2012 for the CMOS Devices and Technology area and is a Distinguished Lecturer, IEEE Electron Device society since 2006. Dr. Rao is a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences. He interacts closely with many semiconductor industries including Intel, IBM, Applied Materials, Maxim and Texas Instruments. He has served on the program/organizing committees of a large number of international conferences in the area of electron devices and was Chairman, IEEE AP/ED Bombay Chapter during 2002-2003. He is currently the vice-chair, IEEE Asia-Pacific Regions/Chapters committee.
Prof. Rao's work on nano-mechanical cantilever technologies has resulted in a start-up company at IIT Bombay (NanoSniff Technologies Pvt. Ltd.) and his work on nano-scale CMOS devices has resulted in multiple international patents/IP transfers to semiconductor industries.
