Bitcoin is the world's first decentralized digital currency. It was announced in 2008 by a person going by the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. While bitcoins were initially worthless, the price of a bitcoin reached $1 in 2011. The current price of a bitcoin is more than $650 and the market capitalization of Bitcoin is more than $10 billion. The true identity of Satoshi Nakamoto remains unknown today. This talk will be a brief introduction to Bitcoin and the blockchain, the main technical innovation behind Bitcoin. The blockchain is a distributed data structure containing Bitcoin transactions. It is claimed to be the biggest technological breakthrough since the Internet. The total venture capital investment in Bitcoin and blockchain startups has exceeded $1.1 billion.
Saravanan Vijayakumaran is an Assistant Professor in Electrical Engineering at IIT Bombay. He received a BTech degree from IIT Guwahati in 2001 and a PhD degree from University of Florida, Gainesville, in 2007. Prior to joining IIT Bombay in 2009, he worked in Microsoft as a Software Development Engineer in Test for about two years.
