The presentation will focus on the use of adaptive and optimization technique for wide area control of FACTS devices. After the initial introduction of different power system oscillations, we will dig into the inter area oscillation for rest of the presentation. The use of an adaptive technique for Phasor Power Oscillation Damper will be elaborated in detail. The technique is also granted for an international patent. The simulation results show that the technique is suitable with any time delay in the communication signal from the remote locations and is also robust in terms of operating conditions. Next we will see an optimization technique to optimally select the controller gains and time constants for lead-lag controllers applied to wide area control of FACTS devices. The optimization technique will be Particle Swarm Optimization. The simulation results show that the PSO works well to optimally select the gains and the time constants of the lead-lag controller for a MISO system and its performance is better than conventional robust controllers. In conclusion, we will discuss the effect of such techniques on HVDC system as well.
