Teaching at IITB: nuts and bolts (and more)
Starting off with a teaching career can be a daunting task. Here, we put together some basics (the nuts and bolts), and share experiences which would be useful.
The most basic resource for teachers at IITB is the "Rules and Regulations" documents for the various academic programmes running at IITB. The rule books cover a variety of topics related to the academic programmes. For someone embarking on a teaching career at IITB, the following topics in the UG Rule Book would be of particular interest.
- Conduct of classes for first-year UG students
- Course attendance rules
- Examination/Assessment
- Grading
- Valid reasons for semester end make-up exam
- Academic malpractice
- Display of in-semester performance
- Disclosing evaluated material in a course
- Answer script retention period
- Compensation time for PwD students
For the post-graduate courses, there would be similar guidelines in the corresponding rule books.
Resources for teachers
The Parimal and Pramod Chaudhari Centre for Learning and Teaching (PPCCLT) at IITB conducts several events related to teaching and learning, including discussion with teachers, training of teaching assistants (TAs), novel teaching and learning methods, etc. Video recordings of these events are available here, and they constitute an important resource for teachers.
The Centre for Educational Technology at IITB has compiled Teaching Resources and Tools for Teachers. Faculty and grad students at the Centre continue to help teachers at IITB to incorporate novel methods in their classes.
Experience is a great teacher. Teachers starting off would benefit from experiences and observations of teachers at IITB who have gone through the learning curve. With that in mind, we have compiled the following documents (with due acknowledgment to the contributors). Happy browsing!
- Aerospace Engineering
- Biosciences and Bioengineering
- Civil Engineering
- Computer Science and Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Humanities and Social Sciences
- Industrial Engineering and Operations Research
- Mechanical Engineering
- Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science
