Reliability Engineering

Basic overview

The Complexity and sophistication of modern products and the severity of enviornmental conditions under which products have to operate have made the task of designing and supervising the manufacture of such products extremely difficult. To achieve high quality level, and, performance-cost ratio, attention must be paid to factors of influence like, Reliability, Availability and Maintainability. Quality & Reliability are injected into the system at various levels starting from design, production, testing, field trials and maintenance. It is challenging problem of optimizing product or system performance with respect to practical constraints like cost, weight volume etc.

Reliability becomes a necessity in any quality conscious enviornment. Reliability analysis of a system or product helps in fixsing up optimum warranty period for a system or product thereby enhancing product demand and profit to the manufacturers. The importance of reliability was left way back in 1960s and has been accepted very well in the developed countries. Many industrial giants like Ford, G.M., IBM, INTEL, British Aerospace, defense Establishments, Nuclear industries etc. have adopted this concept and proved better over all performance. In India, this concept is yet to catch up with a view to improve our economy and quality of human life.

The Inter-disciplinary Programme aims at offering a balanced training in the scientific and technological aspects of Reliability Engineering. The Programme is spread over four semesters. The courses have been so designed as to meet the requirements of persons from industries and R & D organizations. The Programme provides ample scope to participants to go deeper in the areas of their research and professional interest. After completion of the programme, students find employment in public, private and R & D organizations.
