The Information Networks Lab is a part of the Communications and Signal Processing group in the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Bombay. The faculty members associated with the lab are Prof. Abhay Karandikar and Prof. Prasanna Chaporkar.
Our research group has made significant contributions to global telecommunications standards. We led the development of IEEE 1930.1, the first IEEE standard from India focused on beyond 5G technologies, integrating Wi-Fi, 4G, 5G, and 6G under a unified framework. Additionally, we pioneered the concept of "Frugal 5G Networks" for affordable rural broadband, resulting in the approval of IEEE 2061 in June 2024, which includes innovative features like RAN-Core decoupling and Core bypass.
Our efforts also extend to 6G standardization under ITU-T, with the approval of ITU-T Y.2325 in December 2023, aimed at enhancing network scalability and flexibility. We have further contributed to 3GPP 5G Advanced, focusing on satellite communications, energy-efficient networks, and broadcast-broadband convergence.
