Standardization

The Infonet Lab has been at the forefront of global standardization in next-generation communication networks. Our team led the development of IEEE 1930.1: SDN-based Middleware for Wireless Network Control and Management, approved in 2022—marking the first IEEE standard primarily led by Indian researchers. We also spearheaded the creation of IEEE 2061: Architecture for Low Mobility Energy-Efficient Networks for Affordable Broadband Access, approved in June 2024. Furthering our contributions, the lab is actively involved in shaping 6G system architecture through ITU-T. The first standard in this direction, ITU-T Y.2325, approved in December 2023, outlines a software-defined, modular control plane for future mobile networks, aiming for greater scalability, flexibility, and security. Furthermore, our group has made key contributions to 3GPP 5G Advanced and 6G in the areas of energy efficiency and AI/ML. We have also been active in TSDSI, India’s Telecom SDO. A Technical Report, TSDSI TR 6026, on Broadcast Broadband Convergence and a Technical Standard, TSDSI STD 5002, on Enhanced Relays were led by our groups efforts. TSDSI STD 5002 was the first ever TSDSI standard to be accepted as the national standard by Telecommunication Engineering Center (TEC), Govt of India.

IEEE Standards Contributions

Our group has made significant contributions to IEEE standardization efforts, including the first IEEE standard to come out of largely Indian efforts - IEEE 1930.1.

Contribution to IEEE Standards in 5G

  • IEEE 1930.1: Recommended Practice for Software Defined Networking (SDN) based Middleware for Control and Management of Wireless Networks

IEEE 1930.1 standardization was approved in June 2022. It is the first ever IEEE standard to come out of largely Indian efforts.
  • IEEE 2061: Architecture for Low Mobility Energy Efficient Network for Affordable Broadband Access

Pioneered the concept of Frugal 5G for rural broadband and initiated a standardization activity for IEEE 2061 standard under the "Frugal 5G" Working Group in IEEE. The standard IEEE 2061 was approved in June 2024 and is now part of the IEEE suite of global standards. In addition to defining a network architecture for affordable broadband connectivity in rural areas, the standard also introduces novel concepts, such as, RAN-Core decoupling, Unified Multi-RAT RAN and Core bypass, which would likely prove useful for the upcoming 6G system.
