Smart Building Management System

This project, a micro-controller-based system, aims at securing a multi-storied building from fire and burglars, along with automating the lighting system for power saving. It works on a network of micro-controllers communicating among themselves and with a master controller situated at the main control center of the large building. It is a low cost building management system which is at least ten times cheaper than similar products in the market.

It follows a ‘master-slave’ hierarchy. The different floors of a multi-storied building are monitored using ‘slave’ microcontrollers and any threat like fire or unauthorized entry is detected by it. A ‘master’ microcontroller obtains the status from the ‘slaves’ kept in the floors by polling and sends control signals to the slaves, to which the slaves take appropriate actions. The parameters of the slaves can be modified manually through the master. The intensity of the lights in the room is then varied depending on that of the daylight. The fire alarm works independent of these modes and gives an alarm and opens the fire-escape doors in case of any fire. And finally, there is a provision for manual controls as a backup for system failure.
