Topic: Permanent Magnet Motors for Advanced Light Weight Torpedo and Solar Pump: Highlights and Contrasts
Venue: GG 301
Session Chair: Akshatha Shetty
Date: 09/08/2016 at 4 PM
Pre-Requisite: None
Abstract: Permanent magnet Brushless DC (BLDC) motors are gaining popularity over the years due to higher efficiency, torque density, etc. Permanent magnets (PM) used in these motors can be broadly classified as either rare-earth or ferrite PMs based on their chemical composition, cost and magnetic properties. There is a huge difference in the prices of these magnets which is one crucial factor in determining their use for a given application. In this talk, a glimpse on the design of PM BLDC motors for two similar applications will be presented. The motivation behind this talk is to convey to the listeners that despite the similarity, the two designs can be completely contrasting based on the application requirements. Thus, this field of research is both vibrant and challenging

Topic: Doubly Fed Induction Generators
Venue: GG 301
Session Chair: Kaustav Chatterjee
Date: 20/09/2016 at 4.30 PM
Pre-Requisite: None
Abstract: Share of wind in renewable energy growth plays a vital role. Around 80-85% of modern wind turbines have Doubly fed induction generators (DFIG) installed. This talk will give an in depth analysis on DFIG systems for wind turbines. Certain design aspects for DFIG systems will be considered. A vector control strategy and its design will be walked through upon. Later a short circuit analysis of DFIG system will be discussed. An analytical expression is developed to find fault currents under various conditions. The expression can avoid performing extensive simulations. The goal of this talk is to acquaint researchers with DFIG system.

Topic: Challenges for a high-speed centrifuge motor
Venue: GG 301
Session Chair:
Date: 18/10/2016 at 4 PM
Pre-Requisite: None
Abstract: Nuclear Power has been considered as a potential source to meet future electricity demands in India. Most nuclear reactors require centrifuges that can spin at very high speeds inside an evacuated casing for a long time for producing the nuclear fuel (U-235). Electric motor and power supply (frequency changer) are two of the main subsystems of the centrifuge. The characteristics and performance of the motor determine the life and usefulness of the centrifuge.
In this talk, a general overview of the high-speed technology and the various challenges associated with the high-speed centrifuge, that includes both mechanical and electrical aspects, will be addressed. A brief idea of the special type of permanent magnet machine, known as Pan-cake machine or Axial flux machine will be presented. The Pros and Cons of using Axial flux machine for the centrifuge application will also be briefly discussed.
