Power management on SOC, DC-DC Converters, CMOS Analog design

Power management: In the present silicon technology scenario, managing the power on SOC is a biggest challegne for a system designer. Its just not good enough to use a single supply / line for providing power to modules. The issues for managing power include type of DC-DC converter to use, power-on sequence, dynamic voltage levels and frequency for different modules etc. Board level Floor plan, choice of inductors and capacitors and layout have significant impact over the design.

The choice of type of power converter to use depends upon the noise susceptibilty, dynamic load requirements and efficiency etc. Sometimes the supply has to be shared by different modules. Clubbing the modules is a very critical decision.

DC-DC Converters: DC-DC converters include switchers, charge pumps and linear regulators. I am currently working on "Single Input Dual Output Buck Converter" as my MTP. Prof. M. S. Bhagini is my MTP adivsor. First stage of the project involves a versatile modeling of various losses using MATLAB under different values of input voltage and the load. This modeling is used for optimum sizing of the transistor switches. In the second stage of the project, driver and controller for high efficiency will be designed.
