RESEARCH AREAS

The Communication Laboratory in the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Bombay is led by Prof. Girish P Saraph. The research activity focuses on the following areas:

Currently the following research groups are active in the lab:

Router group- Working on development of a router based on VS algorithm

IXP group- Working on development of network applications using IXP 1200/2400 Network Processor

MPLS & Traffic Engineering group- Active in research on MPLS, QoS, Interdomain routing

RF group- Active in RFID, NLJD and WLAN design

RESEARCH FACILITIES

RF/WIRELESS

The lab has state of the art test and measurement equipments for carrying out experimental research in RF/Wireless Electronics. The major ones are:

  • High frequency Spectrum Analyzer (up to 6.7 GHz)

  • High frequency Signal Generator (up to 4 GHz)

  • High frequency Digital Oscilloscope (up to 4 GHz)

  • Network Analyzer (up to 3 GHz)

  • Digital Storage Oscilloscope (up to 200MHz)

  • Spectrum Analyzer (up to 200MHz)

  • Arbitrary Waveform generator (up to 500MHz)

In addition to these high performance equipments lab has several Signal generators, Oscilloscopes (analog and DSO), Regulated power supplies and other necessary infrastructure for experimental research.

The lab possesses Ansoft® HFSS a powerful 3D EM simulator for analysis of microwave structures along with other computational soft wares and EDA tools.

  NETWORKING

INTEL IXP NETWORK PROCESSOR EVALUATION PLATFORM :

IXP 2400 Network Processor Card

Apart from the above measurement and test facilities, the lab has excellent computing facility with high performance computers for carrying out computational research and simulations. The lab has Intel® IXP1200 and IXP2400 Network Processors and software development kit (SDK) to carry out advanced level research in the area of Communication Networks.

MPLS TEST BED :

Recently, an MPLS test-bed has been set-up for implementation of DiffServ over MPLS-TE. A real-time routing protocol has been implemented on Linux platform. This set-up can be extended for study of multicasting.

OPNET :

Evaluations are carried out over OPNET for scalability analysis of different protocols. OPNET is also used for study and implementation of Inter-domain routing, QOS routing and Diffserv over MPLS-TE.
