PhD Admissions
The Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Bombay invites applications for the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme from highly motivated candidates with a strong academic background and a passion for research in electrical engineering and allied areas.
The EE department has an ambitious plan of increasing both the quality and quantity of PhD level research. If you are interested in doing cutting-edge research in any area of electrical engineering and have an outstanding academic record, do write to a faculty member with matching research interests or to the Head of the Department (head@ee.iitb.ac.in).
Admission Categories
Research Assistant (RA)
PhD students admitted as Research Assistants receive a monthly stipend funded through sponsored research projects. They work closely with their thesis supervisors on project-related research.
Institute Fellowship
Candidates admitted under this category receive financial support from government schemes channelled through the institute. They select their guide and research topic after admission.
Sponsored / Part-time
Working professionals sponsored full-time by their organisations, as well as IIT Bombay employees (IS/PS), may apply for a part-time PhD programme.
MTech + PhD (Dual)
The department offers a dual MTech + PhD programme for bright B.E./B.Tech./M.Sc. graduates who wish to enter the doctoral programme directly. Both degrees are awarded on completion.

How to Apply
Admissions to the PhD programme are conducted twice a year (July and January intakes). Eligible candidates must apply through the official IITB admissions portal. A valid GATE score may be required depending on the category and specialisation.
Shortlisted candidates are called for a written test and/or interview. Selection is based on academic performance, research aptitude, and alignment with faculty research interests.
