Optional Requirements
What Are Optional Requirements?
In addition to the compulsory core curriculum, students in the B.Tech and Dual Degree programmes can enrich their academic experience by fulfilling optional requirements. These are not mandatory for graduation but provide opportunities for deeper specialisation, interdisciplinary exposure, or recognition of excellence.
Available Options
Honors
B.Tech students with a CPI above a prescribed threshold can earn an Honors designation by completing a set of additional credits — typically through advanced electives or a supervised research project — beyond the standard programme requirements.
Minor Programme
Students can earn a Minor in a discipline outside their primary department by completing the prescribed set of courses offered by that department. Minors appear on the degree certificate and transcript.
Special Study Elective (SSE)
A Special Study Elective allows students to do directed reading or a supervised project with a faculty member on a topic not covered by regular course offerings. SSEs are approved on a case-by-case basis by the DUGC.
Additional Major
In exceptional cases, students with high CPI may pursue courses leading to an additional major in another department, subject to credit constraints and approval from both departments.
Important
- All optional requirements are subject to credit limits and DUGC/DPGC approval.
- Students are advised to plan early and consult their faculty advisor before enrolling.
- Full rules and regulations governing optional requirements are in the IITB Academic Rulebook.
