FIELD COMPUTATION LABORATORY

In this computational laboratory, the focus is on the following two broad research areas:

  1. This facility has been set up primarily for conducting research in Electromagnetic and Coupled Field Computations. Advanced 2-D and 3-D Finite Element Method (FEM) based numerical analysis can be done for complex systems. A number of FEM codes have been developed for systems comprising of electromagnetic fields coupled with circuits, structures, and thermal systems.
  2. Concurrent and visionary works related to generation, transmission and distribution of electrical energy are also being carried out. Distributed generation, microgrids and renewable energy are the focus of research in the field of generation. Transmission expansion planning, ancillary service management and power system stability are some of the studies undertaken by researchers in the lab. On the distribution side, evolutionary smart grid technologies and distribution automation are the current topics of concern. Standards related studies in all the above fields also form a core part of the lab. Simulation softwares like DigSilent, MiPower, PSCAD, PSS/E and Ansys are available for modeling and simulation of power systems for both transient and steady state analyses. Apart from them, in-lab codes have been developed for other relevant engineering applications.
