History

EE Department

IIT Bombay was established in the year 1957 and the Department of Electrical Engineering (EE) has been one of its major departments from the inception of this institute. The department began with fifty undergraduate students and forty postgraduate students. Currently, the department comprises sixty faculty members, five hundred undergraduate students, and five hundred fifty postgraduate students. The department began with three programs, namely, Bachelor of Technology, Master of Technology, and Doctor of Philosophy. Since 1996, the department has also offered a five-year dual degree (Bachelor of Technology and Master of Technology) with specializations in Communications and Signal Processing and Microelectronics.

Department Specializations & their Evolution

Initially, there were three main specializations in the department: Electronics, Electro-Vacuum Technology, and Machines. With the developments in Electrical Engineering, by 1964, Electronics and Machines evolved into three specializations, Power Systems and Drives, Communication Engineering, and Control and Instrumentation. At present, there are five specializations.

Research and Laboratories

The facilities in the department are among the best in India, and in certain specialized areas compete with leading international universities. We have faculty members equipped with research expertise. We have built a strong collaboration with industries in the past two decades, resulting in several laboratories. Our list of research collaborators also includes several national and international universities and research organizations.

Teaching

Teaching has been given its due importance since the inception of the department. Many faculty members are active in research areas related to their subjects. For students to develop into skilled researchers, they must enjoy the work they do. The atmosphere must be conducive; therefore, many faculty members also offer counselling to the students. A departmental academic mentorship program also supports students.
