EE 6102 – HIGH-FREQUENCY MAGNETICS FOR POWER ELECTRONICS

  • Fundamentals of magnetics – Faradays’, Lenz’s and Ampere’s laws, magnetic circuits and electrical equivalent circuits, multi-winding magnetics
  • Winding ac resistance – skin and proximity effects, Dowell’s equation, conduction losses with PWM waveforms, resistance matrix, Litz wire – basic principle and design, air-gap fringing and its effects on Rac
  • Leakage inductance – Analytical estimation of leakage inductance, interleaving to reduce leakage and ac resistance in transformers and its limitations
  • Winding capacitances – Inter and intra-winding capacitances – genesis and their impacts on circuit operation, techniques to reduce them, analytical estimation
  • Core loss – origin, Steinmetz equation and improvements, core loss measurement techniques, choice of core material
  • Magnetics equivalent circuit modeling and parameter extraction using simulation (FEA) and measurements (impedance analyzer)
  • Miscalleneous and advanced topics – planar magnetics, magnetic integration, matrix transformers, thermal management
